There is one simple reason for this - young people nowadays are just too selfish and too self-centred to have children. And this is particularly true of women. To what extent do you agree with this view? Support your argument with relevant readings and evidence. Countries in phd thesis, the developed world have seen a big shift in title research paper, attitudes to population growth. Several generations ago, it was generally believed that too many babies were being born, and that societies should try to wall reduce their populations.

Nowadays, however, the concern is the reverse - that birthrates are falling too low and that urgent action is paper apa style, needed to encourage people to phd thesis on lean have more children. But what are the short essays causes of this trend? And how much are the attitudes and lifestyles of young people to blame? This essay will consider a number of explanations for the so-called baby crash. My argument will be that to paper apa style hold young people responsible is neither valid nor helpful.

The best explanation, I believe , is to be found in the condition of increased economic insecurity faced by the young. The birth rate has fallen dramatically in many parts of the world. To take several examples, in Europe in 1960, the total fertility rate (TFR) was about 2.6 births per female, but in 1996 it had fallen to 1.4 (Chesnais, 1998) . In many Asian countries, similar declines have been experienced. Japan now has a birthrate of only about 1.3, and Hong Kong#039;s has fallen to below 1.0 (Ichimura and Ogawa, 2000) . A TFR of below 2.0 means that a country#039;s population is not replaced, and thus there is a net population decline. This ageing of the population has the potential to create serious problems. Fewer children being born means that in the long term, a smaller proportion of the populace will be economically productive, whilst a larger proportion will be old and paper, economically dependent - in the form of pension, health care and other social services.

Most experts agree that these greying societies will not be able escape serious social and economic decline in apa style, the future (Chesnais, 1998). So what are the challenge causes of this trend and what can be done to stop it? One common approach has been to lay the blame on young people and title apa style, their supposedly self-centred values. It is argued that in developed societies, we now live in a post-materialist age, where individuals do not have to be so concerned about basic material conditions to survive (McDonald, 2000a). Thus people, especially the young, have become more focussed on the values of self-realisation and the satisfaction of personal preferences, at the expense of traditional values like raising a family. A strong version of this view is put forward by Japanese sociologist, Masahiro Yamada (cited in Ashby, 2000) . He uses the term parasite singles to refer to grown children in their 20s and title apa style, 30s who have left school and are employed, but remain unmarried and , continue live at paper apa style home with their parents. These young people are spoilt, he says, and interested only in their own pleasure - mainly in the form of shopping.

According to Yamada , it is this focus on self, more than any other factor, that is responsible for Japan#039;s languishing birth rate (Ashby, 2000). In other developed countries, there is a similar tendency for the young to remain at home enjoying a single lifestyle - and a similar tendency for older people to interpret this as selfishness (McDonald, 2000a). But is it reasonable to attribute the baby crash to the pleasure-seeking values of the young? The problem with this view is palo duro, that whenever young people are surveyed about their attitudes to family, not only do they say they want to paper have children, they also express preferences for essay interview jeff wall family sizes that are, on average, above the replacement level (McDonald, 2000a). As an example, McDonald quotes an Australian study that found that women aged 20-24 expected to literature review clinical handover have an title research apa style, average of 2.33 children in essay, their lifetime. Findings like this suggest that the values of the research paper apa style young are not at all incompatible with the idea of having a family. It seems then that, as young people progress through their twenties and thirties, they encounter obstacles along the way that prevent them from fulfilling their plans to on lean manufacturing be parents.

Some conservative thinkers believe the main obstacle is the changed role and status of women (eg. Norton, 2003). According to this view, because young women now have greater educational and career opportunities than in previous generations, they are finding the idea of family and motherhood less attractive. Thus, educated middle class women are delaying marriage and childbirth or even rejecting motherhood altogether. It is claimed that women#039;s improved status - which may be a good thing in itself - has had the unfortunate consequence of threatening population stability. But there are several problems with this argument. For one, the lowest TFRs in Europe are found in Spain and research, Italy (around 1.2), both more traditional, male-oriented societies, which offer fewer opportunities to women. In comparison, Sweden which has been a leading country in advancing the rights of women enjoys a higher TFR (1.6 in literature review council, 1996) - even though it is still below replacement. Chesnais (1998: p. 99) refers to paper this contrast as the feminist paradox and concludes that empowerment of women [actually] ensures against a very low birth rate (my emphasis) . Another problem with trying to link improved education levels for women to review australian low birth rates is that fertility in developed countries seems to be declining across all education and class levels.

In a recent survey of Australian census data, Birrell (2003) found that, whereas the non-tertiary-educated group was once very fertile, its rate of partnering is now converging towards that of tertiary educated women. We can summarise the discussion to this point as follows: Young people today, in spite of what#039;s said about paper, their values, still express a desire to have children. However, few end up having as many as they say they would like. The improved education and career opportunities for women does not seem to be the decisive factor in reducing the number of children that a woman has. These conclusions suggest that there must be something else involved. Many writers are now pointing to a different factor - the economic condition of young people and their growing sense of insecurity. Peter McDonald (2000a) in his article #039;Low fertility in Australia: Evidence, causes and review, policy responses#039; discusses some of the things that a couple will consider when they are thinking of having a child. One type of thinking is what McDonald calls Rational Choice Theory, whereby a couple make an assessment of the relative costs and benefits associated with becoming a parent.

In traditional societies, there has usually been an politics competition, economic benefit in title research, having children because they can be a source of labour to help the essay competition family. In developed societies, however, children now constitute an economic cost, and politics, so, it is argued, the benefits are more of a psychological kind - for example, enjoying the status of being a parent, having baby who will be fun and will grow up to love you, having offspring who will carry on the family name etc. The problem, McDonald suggests, is that for many couples nowadays the economic cost can easily outweigh any perceived psychological benefits. McDonald (2000b) discusses another type of decision-making - Risk Aversion Theory - which he says is also unfavourable to the birth rate. According to this theory, when we make important decisions in interview, our lives life, if we perceive uncertainty in our environment, we usually err on the side of safety in order to avert risk. McDonald points to a rise in economic uncertainty which he thinks has steered a lot of young people away from life-changing decisions like marriage and parenthood:

Jobs are no longer lifetime jobs. There is a strong economic cycle of booms and busts. Geographic mobility may be required for employment purposes (McDonald, 2000: p.15). Birrell (2003) focuses on increased economic uncertainty for men. Referring to title paper the situation in Australia, he discusses men#039;s reluctance to form families in terms of perceived costs and phd thesis, risks: Many men are poor - in 2001, 42 per cent of men aged 25-44 earnt less than $32,000 a year. Only two-thirds of men in this age group were in full-time work. Young men considering marriage could hardly be unaware of the risks of marital breakdown or the long-term costs, especially when children are involved (Birrell, 2003: p.12). And Yuji Genda (2000) in Japan, responding to Yamada#039;s analysis of parasite singles, argues that the failure of young Japanese to leave home and start families is not due to self-indulgence, but is an understandable response to increasingly difficult economic circumstances.

Genda (2000) notes that it is the young who have had to bear the on lean brunt of the decade long restructuring of the Japanese economy, with youth unemployment hovering around 10% and title paper, a marked reduction in secure full-time jobs for the young. Young people around the world seem to have an increasing perception of economic uncertainty and contemplate something their parents would have found impossible - a decline in living standards over their lifetime. According to a 1990 American survey, two thirds of respondents in the 18-29 age group thought it would be more difficult for their generation to sat essay 11 live as comfortably as previous generations (cited in Newman, 2000: p.505). Furthermore, around 70% believed they would have difficulty purchasing a house, and around 50% were worried about their future. Findings like these suggest that the younger generation may be reluctant to have children, not because they have more exciting things to do, but because they have doubts about their capacity to provide as parents.

If we accept that economics has played a significant role in young people choosing to have fewer babies, then the key to reversing this trend is for governments to take action to remove this sense of insecurity. A number of policy approaches have been suggested. Some writers have focussed on the need for better welfare provisions for families - like paid parental leave, family allowances, access to child care, etc (Chesnais, 1998). Others have called for more radical economic reforms that would increase job security and raise the living standards of the young (McDonald, 2000b). It is hard to essay jeff know what remedies are needed.

What seems clear, however, is apa style, that young people are most unlikely to courage reproduce simply because their elders have told them that it is selfish to do otherwise. Castigating the young will not have the effect of making them willing parents; instead it is likely to just make them increasingly resentful children. Ashby, J. (2000). (Always check which system is title research apa style, required in each of your subjects.) Citation 2 (Ichimura and Ogawa, 2000) Citations can be set out in a number of ways.

One method is to present some information and then provide the citation immediately after it to indicate the source. These are known as #039;information-prominent#039; citations eg: Japan now has a birthrate of only about 1.3, and Hong Kong#039;s has fallen to below 1.0 (Ichimura and Ogawa, 2000). Other formats are considered further on. Citation 3 Masahiro Yamada (cited in Ashby, 2000) This citation means that the student is , dealing with the ideas of Yamada, but actually read about title apa style, them in Ashby#039;s text. Whilst you should make an effort to read ideas in their original form, this is not always possible.

In such cases, use the #039;cited in#039; format. When you are summarising the ideas of a writer, you need to use reporting expressions like the ones used here: He [Yamada] uses the term . According to Yamada. You use these to distance yourself from certain language. eg. when you are using an informal expression, or a term used by others that you don#039;t necessarily agree with. In this paragraph, the student wants to reject the view in the topic - that young people#039;s selfishness is to blame for the declining birthrate. Notice how he does this in a careful way, by using expressions like: Findings like this suggest that . It seems then that . Being careful about the way you express your claims is a distinctive feature of academic style. When you quote an author (like Chesnais here) you need to essay interview selected use quotation marks, and indicate the exact page number in the citation. Sometimes you may need to change the wording of the title research apa style quote slightly so that it fits into your sentence. If you need to add/change any words, use [ ]; if you need to delete words, use . (Whilst it is OK to change the wording of a quote, you must never change its sense.)

Use italics when you want to emphasise a word. (When you do this in a quote, you need to indicate that it is your emphasis.) It#039;s OK to essay selected use dot points in an essay (or numbered points here), but use them very sparingly. Citation 4 Peter McDonald (2000a) . discusses. Notice how in some citations the palo essay author can be part of the research paper sentence: Peter McDonald (2000a) . discusses some of the things etc. This is known as an #039;author-prominent#039; citation and is very common in sat essay 11, academic writing. Notice the research paper use of reporting verbs in interview selected wall, this citation type (discusses). Use #039;inverted commas#039; for the title of an article.

Use italics for the title of a book. Notice some of the other reporting expressions used in the student#039;s summary of Peter McDonald#039;s ideas: . what McDonald calls. . McDonald points to . . which he thinks. It#039;s very important to title apa style make it clear to your reader when one paragraph ends and a new one begins. In this paragraph (#9), there is some potential for confusion. Notice how the short about courage student has used indenting to make this clear. Quotes of more than one sentence in length should be separated from the main text. Notice how these are indented and are in a slightly smaller font. Again you should indicate the page number.

You only have to provide a separate list of references when you use the author-date system. Entries should be set out in alphabetical order. Each entry should generally be set out in the following order and format: Author family name, Initial. (date). Title. Place: Publisher.

It is becoming increasingly common for politics students to refer to sources from the world wide web in their essays. In addition to providing author and title of site, you need to paper include: the URL for the site when you accessed the site. Although web references can be very useful, you obviously need to politics essay exercise some caution - there is a lot of junk around. Check all sites carefully to be sure the information provided has credibility (.edu and politics essay, .org sites are generally the more reliable). Problems? Questions?

Want to create your own banners? Each image should be 97 pixels wide x 68 pixels high. For the profile picture, you're limited to an image no larger than 180 x 540 pixels. You can always left-click and hold to drag the text to a better position, while editing it or afterward. Once you're done, save your image by clicking File Save… from the menu bar and saving it to your computer.

Pixlr offers the option of saving directly to Facebook but since you don't know what they'll do with your password, don't risk it. For the new profile picture, go to Edit Profile Profile Picture (in Facebook) and browse for the profile image on your computer. For the banner images, upload them to a new album in the order you want them to appear on your profile from right to left. Title. Using the sets above as an example, you would first upload the Experience banner, then the Portfolio banner, and so on. Tag yourself in research each of the banners but do it in backwards order . Using the banner sets above as an example, this means that the Experience banner would be the last one tagged. By now you can already view your mostly-complete new profile to see how your Facebook resume looks.

Instead of your Wall, the key is to check your Info page since that is what non-friends will see. Depending on literature australian council which information you've already entered in the past, your new resume's top banner images may not be evenly spaced. In that case, you'll need to modify your bio until the spacing is fixed. Each of the 5 banner images now appearing at the top of your profile corresponds to a section of your resume. For each banner image, copy paste the text from your print resume into the banner image caption and save your changes.

Now when someone clicks one of the banner photos, they'll be able to read that section of your resume, right there on Facebook. Every time someone tags an image of you, it will be added to the images at the top of your Facebook profile. Make sure Facebook sends you a notification whenever someone ‘Tags you in a photo', so you can hide that photo from blocking one of your resume section banners from appearing. From each of your Facebook resume sections, include a message and a link for visitors to download your real, print resume. Finally- don't forget to choose your square avatar from your new, long profile picture, preferably the part with your face. You wouldn't want your avatar all over Facebook with only a chunk of title research paper apa style your eye and half of 2 words appearing. Do this in Facebook by clicking: Edit Profile Profile Picture Edit Thumbnail. Claudio Nader started his UK life in London at the end of 2010, just because “Italy is not a country for young men”. Announcing the JobMob Job Tips Newsletter and The Ultimate Twitter Job Search Guide. MyBlogGuest: A Great Tool For Growing Your Blogging. Announcing The 2016 Ultimate Twitter Job Search Guide. This is title research paper apa style, a really creative way of sat essay 11 positioning an active job search. Facebook Accounted For 10% of all US Page views (according to a recently released study) and phd thesis using it to help your personal network spread the word is awesome and in my opinion, currently under-utilized. This alone won’t land a job, but it IS great marketing! This is a great tool, IF a job seeker or careerist can clearly and concisely express a value, career brand, and compelling “what I can do for you” message. If not, don’t bother!

Clarity with brevity and value rules in title paper an age where people are as likely to view content on a smart phone or iPad as they are on a computer–and when they spend large chunks of time in the social media space. Today, anyone looking to be effective in politics competition job search or career building needs to embrace the concept of title research apa style “Mighty Minimalism tm” in their entire CareerComm network—from Twitter, to resume, to video, to pitches for LinkedIn and Facebook, and more. My esteemed colleague Jason Alba (of JibberJobber) says we are a nation of skimmers. And he’s right. No one has the time or patience to wade through content. It’s a “bottom-line-it-for-me” world, and whether we like it or not, we work in it.

Embrace it, maximize it, or lose any hope of a competitive edge. In the scope of Mighty Minimalism, working HARD to know themselves and their market is critical for jobseekers developing a tweet-sized pitch focused on the target’s need and delivering a pop of value and title research apa style hint of essay competition brand–in literally seconds, or in very limited space. Title Paper. That pitch is the foundation for all of phd thesis manufacturing their messaging, and that pitch is title research apa style, what belongs on the “Facebook resume.” In the Twitter Job Search Guide and the Get Clear! Get Found Get Hired! Coach certification program (G3Coach, from TheAcademies) we say “Be bold and brief to get belief!” And the concept of using Facebook for title research apa style, a bold, brief, micro resume has real promise, when used with that kind of clear compelling message. I applaud the work that went into developing the concept and essay the detailed instructions in the post. However, I respectfully submit that the example shown in title research the blog post doesn’t go far enough to become a truly compelling message. It’s all about the individual and challenge essay gives no hint of the value that the “I like to… and I’m passionate about… ” attributes will actually deliver. The blunt reality is title research paper, that no one cares about what you like, or are good at, or even where you worked or went to school, until they know what you can do for them that meets bleeding need or aspirational desire.

So adding in the “I know what you need; I’ve done it; Here’s what happened when I did it; I can do it again!” piece into the Facebook profile pitch will grab attention from the people who want what you’re selling (YOU)! With this tool, Facebook becomes another critical conduit for projecting your branded value (Why-Buy-ROI tm). I say if you’re not in a confidential search, use it (if you are employed and testing the waters, don’t! use it)! And do it soon. People get job leads from friends on Facebook by just mentioning a need in a post. Imagine what can happen when that message is title paper, vibrant, branded, value-filled, and front-and-center in your profile! I wrote something very similar to this and I think it’s amazing. It’s a fantastic idea, and utilizing the Full profile picture is title research paper, important too. Thanks for your mention of my idea, i hope it will gets something good and new #128512; And if there`s someone who is sat essay 11, looking for a media assistant in London, UK, here i am, with my powerful ideas, ready to grow your audience! Check my own and research personal How To at http://www.claudionader.com.

Hannah- “…currently under-utilized.” Yes- which means that right now is the best opportunity to do something like this. Deb- thanks for essay competition, the guest post #128578; Great addition to the article. Claudio can definitely improve on his Facebook resume – and title research I hint at that with my different take on the banner photos – but since it was his great idea, I thought it would get the most attention in its current, original form. I fully agree with the fact that – unless you’re a celebrity – no one cares about your personal interests, which is why in my 111 Smart Resume Section Headings and Titles, I recommended not including any resume section for them. Rich- don’t be afraid to share the link to your article here, I know you’re no spammer. Claudio- I’m happy to see the attention your concept is getting, and apa style hopefully you’ll get the right attention too. This is phd thesis manufacturing, a great idea! How creative! I will definitely be telling all of my friends who are job searching about this.

I like the idea of posting your resume to friends who usually know you best. The only hurdle I see this having is if a job seeker is a career switcher or looking to present themselves to more than one type of essay employer audience. Which, nowadays, most people are doing to maximize the number of opportunities they apply to….Tailoring your resume for a particular job description is key, which may be difficult here unless numerous differently tailored versions of research apa style this resume can be presented.
